The Narbethong Timber Mill saw 13 people, four dogs and a cat seek refuge in
the kiln from the Black Saturday Fires. When the roof of the kiln itself caught
alight, a call had to be made - stay and perish or make a run through the raging
flames outside and attempt to reach their parked cars nearby to flee the fire.
Thankfully, all escaped through the flames in their melting vehicles to the safe-haven
nearby of an underground cellar at Mystic Mountains Ski Hire. Narbethong Timber mill
was lost, along with three mill houses, displacing many of the kiln's 'inmates' from their
homes.
On a happier note, our kiln refugees reunited last week for a photo session together at
the Narbethong Mill. In spite of wet and cold weather, spirits were high and a sense of
camaraderie hung in the air. Everybody wanted a photo taken of them together 'just for
the record' The Narbethong Mill owners are currently in the process of getting the old
timber mill up and running again, thus keeping industry alive and well in our small but
industrious little town. Please check back to this page to read individual accounts as
told by the 'kilnfolk' themselves!
